In Maryland, if you die without a will your estate is distributed according to statute. It doesn't matter what you wanted or what your loved ones want. By law, your assets and possessions are distributed to those persons designated in the statute. A will allows you to have control over what happens to your assets and possessions when you die. In addition, you can also designate your last wishes as to burial, cremation and funeral arrangements, not to mention designating where your best friend will go. Why leave these hard decisions to your loved ones when you can make these decisions yourself?
In Maryland, if you are injured or sick and unable to express your medical wishes, your next of kin are responsible for making the hard decisions.
